Copan's most famous structure is the Hieroglyphic Stairway, which was completed in 743 AD. The 64 steps of this stairway contain rocks on which 300 years of history are inscribed. The only problem with reading these steps is that some of the stones are missing and they are now all out of place, due to an earlier reconstruction. This stairway will soon be moved into the Copán Museum in order to protect it from the elements.
A stelae found in the Great Plaza.
A yellow fly catcher rests on another stelae in the Great Plaza.
Alter Q was built by the 16th ruler of Copán, "New Dawn" or "Sun Rise". Around this alter was carved the 16 great kings of Copán. Here the first ruler is passing the sceptor onto New Dawn. This alter was also used for the sacrification of jaguars, which were the symbols of warriors.
This stelae depicts another great king of Copán.
Stelae B is one of the most popular of the Copán collection. The intricate sculpture of this Mayan king is found on most of the advertisements and brochures for Copán.
After our exciting and informative visit to Copán, we said goodbye to our new Dutch friends and to our guide, Juan.
