Don't Mess with Texas!

Texas is big..it is very big at 800 miles wide and almost one thousand miles from top to bottom.  Everything in Texas is big.  The cowboy hats are big, the ranches are big and there is a lot of big open space.

Texas did not join the United States until 1845.  The Texans agreed to become a part of the union on the condition that it could secede whenever it wished.  This agreement is still in effect.  Texas truly does sit apart from the rest of the nation.  It has its own personality and a very strong state pride.

Dallas is one of the largest growing cities in the USA, because there is so much space to work with.

While in Dallas, we stayed with Kelly's cousin Gavin, and his wife, Cindy, and their boys, Cal and Chris.  Cindy cooked us some great gumbo and showed us JR's ranch.  Here they are along with Cindy's mom.

We also visited with our very good friends from Atlanta, Monica and Kirk Hermansen.  Monica and Kirk moved back to their home state of Texas while we were away on our sabbatical.  In fact, a lot has gone on in their lives while we have been gone.  Kirk moved his land development firm to Dallas.  Here he is in his cool office showing us the plans for an in-town shopping development. Monica moved her design firm to Dallas as well.  However, the most important change in their lives is....

..little Kennedy Michelle.

Kennedy is actually now close to being one year old.  Here is the Hermansen family sitting at the dinner table in a swanky restaurant in the swanky part of town.

Not only is Texas big, but it is also pretty flat.  We had a great time driving along the wide open space on our way to New Mexico.  We passed ranches, oil pumps, ghost towns and also just a lot of nothing.

Rich takes a big deep breath of fresh air as we drive across Texas to New Mexico.

The roads are quiet out here in the countryside of the Lonestar state.

Continue with us to New Mexico
