2 Go Packs
Up

We are writing this section on Friday, September 24, 1999.   We are leaving today and our packs have been packed and repacked several times.  We will each be carrying our own big backpack and we will also have a day pack that we will share.  Rich will be carrying a Dana Design Terraplane X (roughly 5800 cubic inches) and Kelly an Osprey Ariel (roughly 4500 cubic inches) pack.  Both of these packs were purchased at High Country Outfitters over a year ago when we went climbing at Mt. Rainier for the first time.  These packs have been very very good to us...they got us to the summit.

Note that on international flights, the maximum checked baggage allowance is 20 kilograms (roughly 44 pounds).  So whatever ends up in our packs, we will make sure they weigh 44 pounds or less (hopefully much less).  By the way, if you are somewhat puzzled, as we initially were, about how to weigh a pack, merely weigh yourself, pack off, on an ordinary bathroom scale.  Then put the loaded pack on and weigh yourself again.  Pretty simple, but we admit it took us a little time to figure it out.

You may think that limiting your pack to 44 pounds should not be a problem.  However, for those of you who have reviewed our 2 Go Packing Lists, you will understand that these items really do start adding up.  The heaviest item, of course, is the computer and all of the additional components that we must bring in order to bring this web site to you.  The next heaviest item, believe it or not,  is our toiletry kit.  Shampoo and soap both weigh a lot!  We have lost several items from the packs, including a tent.  We figure if we end up needing one, we will rent it.  As we get further into the day, there is no doubt that we will repack our packs a few more times.
Well, we gotta go.......pack.
