When one thinks about the immaculate and picturesque country of Switzerland, they may begin to imagine the alps with their green valleys and snow capped peaks, yodeling goat herdsmen, hot chocolate, the Red Cross, Heidi, and men with black hats blowing very long horns.

We have traveled through Switzerland before, and we have yearned to return since our last visit.  The images mentioned above are still to be found throughout Switzerland.

Prior trips to Switzerland included the small village of Gimmelwald located in the Berner-Oberland region above the more touristy Interlaken.  We fell in love with the small village in the Alps where Heidi would have lived.  We also visited Montreaux back in 1997 with friends, Bill and Ginger during their Jazz Festival.

This time, we stayed in the charming resort village of Zermatt which is nestled in the Southern Swiss Alps.   While Zermatt is filled with wealthy tourists who do not mind paying the $50 to catch the train up to this car-free village, we found ourselves to be quite welcome, even though we were just jobless back packers.  The reason for this is that we were taken in by our new friends Bill and Poppy who have taken up residence in Zermatt.  They introduced us to all of their friends which included native Zermattans and others from all over the globe.  Zermatt has attracted these people because of its beautiful scenery, its prime location for year-round skiing and other adventure sports such as paragliding and mountain climbing.
