Meet Ruth, Winnie and Colin

Ruth Yap and her sister, Winnie Temple, both grew up in Singapore and traveled through Malaysia several times when they were kids.  Now they were returning, this time with Winnie's son, Colin Temple, also from Singapore, but currently residing in the United Kingdom.

We met Winnie first in front of the Cathay Hotel down in Georgetown in Panang.  We ran into her again on the funicular to Penang Hill.  She was very friendly and talkative, as she explained to us that she was traveling with her sister and her twenty-two year old son, Colin.  She was very proud as she talked about both of them and their journey.  They were on their way to a bungalow on the top of the hill that Colin had resourcefully arranged through the Panang government.  She was kind enough to invite us to see the Bungalow.  We gladly agreed to tag along.  Half way up the hill, we had to switch funiculars, and we separated from Winnie.   But not to worry, as we just so happened to share a car with Ruth, who we immediately knew had to be the sister of our new friend, Winnie.  We realized then that we were going to have a fun time.  At the top of the hill, we were introduced to Colin, an intelligent young man who had decided to drag his mother and aunt along on holiday through Malaysia.  We spent the rest of that afternoon with Ruth, Winnie and Colin, and they graciously invited us to stay, as the bungalow was quite large.  While we were not able to stay that evening as our bags were back in Georgetown, the following day we returned to the hill and stayed the night with our new friends.  This trio was a joy to be around as they taught us about the Chinese New Year, Southeast Asia, and the rest of the world for that matter.

Meet Ruth:

Ruth Yap is an energetic woman of Chinese descent, born in Malaysia, and raised in Singapore.  When she is not busy traveling or occasionally coming out of retirement as a surgical nurse, Ruth spends time with her grandchildren.  These children are very lucky.  As we mentioned earlier, Ruth is very well traveled, having traveled throughout Europe, the United States, Asia, and even the Artic Circle.  She has the travel thing down, as she carries her mini hot water boiler and her chocolate Milo drink mix and boxed milk.  She made us several yummy hot Milo drinks.  Ruth loves to watch movies, read books, listen to her music and watch sunrises and sunsets.  Ruth woke us up, at our request, to see the sunrise over the city of Georgetown and its adjoining harbor.

Meet Winnie:

Winnie Temple is a very outgoing and friendly Chinese woman who was born and raised in Singapore, but currently takes up dual residency in her hometown of Singapore and Worcester, United Kingdom.... or Shakespeare country, as she put it.  While she grew up in Singapore, Winnie left her native country several times to study in Melbourne, Australia and Great Britain.  It should come as no surprise, then, that Winnie eventually married a man from Great Britain, who she met in Singapore.  Together, they had their son Colin, who has had the benefit of living in both Great Britain and Singapore while growing up.  Winnie was a home economics teacher for high school aged children.  Her main emphasis was on family roles and nutrition.  She still is very interested in the science of nutrition.

Meet Colin:

Colin Temple is a young and well-educated 22 year old man born in Singapore, but raised in both Singapore and Great Britain.  The only son of two independent and worldly people, he has traveled extensively with his parents throughout Southeast Asia and Europe.  He has also traveled to the United States, and recently to Morocco with his buddies from the University.  Colin is now a university graduate with a degree in architectural history, with plans to go further with his education, perhaps in management.  Colin was very helpful as he told us about the history of Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia and Singapore, from the days of Dutch and British occupation to their present day independence.
